The Prophet Muhammad SAW said,
“Nobody is struck with a trial or calamity, musibah,
and then they say,
We belong to Allah and we shall return to Allah.
O Allah!
Help me
in this calamity of mine
and replace it for me with something better"
except that Allah will turn his trial into a blessing.
(This is) a promise from Allah.
There is a story about Ummu Salamah RA,
the wife of the Prophet Muhammad SAW,
before she married the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Abu Salamah was a pious person;
his iman was outstanding.
Abu Salamah passed away.
Ummu Salamah was still young;
she still needed a husband.
They had one child, Salamah.
During the early days of Islam there weren’t
many Muslim men.
She heard this hadith of the Prophet Muhammad SAW,
“Whoever is struck with calamity and then they say,
We belong to Allah and we shall only return to Him.
O Allah,
أَجِرْنِي - help me
- in this calamity of mine
- and replace it for me
- with something better.
Thereafter, the Prophet said that the trial will be changed into a blessing.
So Umm Salamah said, “I implemented this du’a
for 3 months,
and I repeatedly thought,
“I wonder who Allah will give as my husband?”
(This was) because men of Abu Salamah’s level
were not easy (to find) then –
someone who had iman in the beginning of Islam;
a pious person.
She said, “I realized the power of this du’a
after three months
when a proposal came from
the Prophet Muhammad SAW.”
And the Prophet Muhammad is surely better
than Abu Salamah.
(This happened) because she implemented this du’a.
And the scholars of the Salaf, dear brothers and sisters,
even if their foot was simply hit by a rock,
they said,
وَاخْلِفْلِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا";
if they exited the home and it rained, (they said),
and to whatever that happened.
(If) we want to eat and our food isn’t ready (then say,)
Whatever it is,
(whether) an appointment was canceled,
(or) the marriage didn’t happen
(or) the business didn’t start, (we say,)
