Kind: captions Language: en you're watching a Nova Video podcast on the DARPA Grand [Music] Challenge my name is Anthony leowski I was a grad student at uh Berkeley instead of continuing on to finish my PhD I decided it was much better to do the Grand Challenge and I'm the blue team's uh team leader being part of the Grand Challenge is the dreams of you know man since they realized the wheel existed I mean can you make uh something drive on their own so the fact that it's actually happening now is something that you can't pass up you want to start here I I do think the people on our team are most dedicated of anybody else um none of them are being paid um we're all doing this as volunteers but yet we're putting 12 14 16 hour days here we go you may be wondering how we keep the bike stable by using steering only and that's the way humans do it it's very simple basically if the vehicle starts to fall to the left um you steer left and by steering left you're getting cental acceleration and that pulls you back up so if you're doing this fast enough you can now constantly uh hold any angle you want [Music] Thrill is uh seeing something that everybody who you know told you could not be done work because you put in hours to make it happen uh our schedule you know typically starts out 10: or 11:00 a.m. every day and then we have about four or five hours where we talk about um what needs to be done thought we talked about this we were going to get this like two weeks ago like Monday sure this is uh Anthony leowski calling back iy spoke with him yesterday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. I I'm on the phone I'm cold calling I'm uh trying to get uh sponsors I'm trying to get people excited about the project roughly around 600 p.m. we take the bike out and we go testing [Music] yeah I [Music] mean this [Music] there yeah well the thing is it went too [Music] far it takes probably 14 hours a day plus a couple hours for showering and food and so forth I I think it's totally worth it though for more on the Grand Challenge visit us online at pbs.org noova robot race
