you're watching a Nova science Now video
podcast Stonehenge is perhaps the most
famous of all the stone monuments in the
world the sun rises exactly over a
particular alignment of these Stones it
attracts hundreds of people honoring the
existence of the sun hi I'm Neil degrass
Tyson host of Nova science now you're
with me here on 42nd Street in the heart
of New York City because Manhattan is
laid out on a grid there are 2 days of
the year where this becomes a special
moment the sun sets exactly aligned with
all the cross streets of the
island I like to think of it as
Manhattan
henge so what brings you here I just uh
want to see the sunset in the middle of
the street this be of light will come
like straight that way well this is a
special spot as far as I'm concern isn't
it gorgeous oh is it no no I thought
that was over there yeah it's not often
that we get to have a cosmic phenomenon
happening just for us this is just a
rare New York
moment as an
astrophysicist and as an educator I'll
take any excuse I can get to get people
to look up to notice our Cosmic
environment
in a few minutes the Sun is going to
move diagonally down into the right and
it's going to pop right into our
view then it kisses The Horizon just
over New Jersey and then it
descends Twilight and then Nightfall
