Al Imam Al Bukhari and Al Imam Muslim
narrated in their authentic hadith
about the history of the Prophet ﷻ
when he was going to build the Prophet Mosque
when the Prophet ﷻ migrated to Medina
The Prophet ﷻ stopped in the region of Kuba
and built the Mosque of Kuba
And the Prophet ﷻ entered the City of Medina
And his camel and him stopped
because his camel was ordered by Allah SWT
to chose a place to build a mosque
The camel stopped on a land owned
by the People of Najjar
The Prophet ﷻ wanted to buy the land
to build the Prophet Mosque
And the Messenger of Allah ﷻ said
<i>O Bani An-Najjar! Suggest to me
a price for this land of yours</i>
Because the Prophet ﷻ wanted
to build the Prophet Mosque
What was the answer of Bani Najjr
from the People of Anshar?
The companions radiyatallahu anhum
They said
<i>By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,
we will demand the price from none...
...but Allah SWT
Finally, the Messenger of Allah ﷻ built
the Prophet Mosque from the waqaf of Bani Najjr
And now, it has been more than 1,400 years
This mosque has always been full
with people who pray there
The rewards will continue to be sent
to those who give wakaf
That is Bani Najjar radiyallahu ta'ala anhum
This is what in Islam is called by wakaf
That is one who has died,
has entered his grave
but still receive rewards from Allah SWT
Allah SWT orders us to live
in this world to worship Allah
<i>And I did not create the jinn
and mankind except to worship Me.</i>
One shall worship Allah as much as he can
get rewards as many as he can
from which he will receive
the result in the hereafter
In this world, we've given the chance
to do good deeds
until death comes
But Islam gives the opportunity
that even if we die,
we still receive rewards
by giving a will and waqf
When one gives a good will
before he dies
and his will is executed
he still receives the reward
Also, when one gives waqf from a part
of his property for Allah SWT
When he dies, he continues to receives
rewards from Allah SWT
Allah SWT said
Allah said <i>Indeed, it is We
who bring the dead to life</i>
<i>And we record what they have put forth
and what they left behind</i>
And the deeds they left behind,
one of them could be waqf
The Prophet ﷻ said
<i>When a man dies,
his acts come to an end</i>
<i>but three</i>
<i>except recurring charity.</i>
<i>or knowledge (by which people) benefit</i>
<i>or a pious son, who prays for him</i>
The scholars said, what is meant by
<i>sadaqah jariyah</i> (recurring charity) is waqf
Therefore, if we read the history
of the companions
All companions who had the ability
they gave waqf
Jabir bin Abdillah ra said
<i>None of the companions of the Prophet ﷻ</i>
<i>who had the capacity for
except that they gave waqf</i>
Imam Syafi'i rahumahullahu ta'ala said
<i>I've heard that 80 companions
from the People of Anshar</i>
<i>All gave waqf</i>
All wanted to continue to receive rewards
after they died
Thus, waqf was a deed that was really
practiced by the companions
They even gave for waqf the most beautiful
the most valuable property they had
Look at Abu Thalha ra from the people of Anshar
Annas ra said
<i>Abu Talhah ra was the richest among the Ansar
and possessed the largest property from palm-trees,</i>
<i>Among his possessions what he loved most</i>
<i>was his garden known as Bairuha'</i>
At that period, those who possessed
palm trees were rich
Because dates were the best selling commodity
So, if one had a garden of palm trees
that means he wa was rich
And among the possession of Abu Thalha
that he loved most was his palm tree garden
Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) often visited it
and drank from its fresh water.
When this Ayah was revealed
<i>By no means shall you attain
Al-Birr (piety, righteousness)</i>
<i>unless you spend (in Allah's Cause)
of that which you love</i>
When this verse was revealed,
Abu Thalha went to see the Prophet ﷻ
He said, <i>يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ</i>
<i>O Messenger of Allah ﷻ</i>
<i>The dearest of my property is Bairuha', so I have
given it as Sadaqah (charity) for Allah's sake</i>
<i>Be a witness, I have given
this property for Allah's sake</i>
He gave it as waqf
<i>So spend it, O Messenger of Allah,
as Allah guides you</i>
Then the Prophet ﷻ said
<i>Well-done</i>; in Arabic, بَخٍ <i>bakhin</i>
showed how the Prophet ﷻ admired this action
He admired what Abu Thalha said
Not only he did charity, but he also
gave what he loved most
So, the Prophet ﷻ said
<i>Well-done</i>
<i>This is a profitable property</i>
By giving this property as waqf
Finally, Abu Thalha distributed it
among his relatives and cousins
Look how Abu Thalha gave to waqf
what he loved most
Look at Umar bin Khattab ra
Ibnu Umar, his son, narrated
<i>When `Umar got a piece of land in Khaibar</i>
A property that Umar loved most
he came to the Prophet (ﷺ)
Umar wanted to have a discussion
with the Prophet ﷻ
about what he should do
with the property he loved most
So Umar said
<i>"O Messenger of Allah,
I have got a piece of land in Khaibar</i>
<i>It is better than which I have never got</i>
<i>So what do you advise me regarding it??</i>
Then, the Prophet ﷻ said
<i>If you wish you can keep it</i>
<i>You can keep it as an endowment
to be used for charitable purposes</i>
Umar agreed with the advice
from the Prophet ﷻ
And Umar gave to charity
the property he loved most
The harvest was given to the poor,
to the needy, and those who studied
This is Umar bin Khattab ra
Look at Khalid ibn Walid ra
One day, the Prophet ﷻ ordered
some people
to collect charity (zakat)
Some came to Khalid to Khalied
to collect zakat, and he didn't give any
They complained this to the Prophet ﷻ
They said, <i>O Messenger of Allah
Khalid bin Walid didn't pay charity tax</i>
Then, what did the Prophet ﷻ say?
<i>Adapun Khalid</i>
<i>But you are unfair
in asking Zakat from Khalid</i>
The Prophet explained, how could Khalid
pay the charity tax
while he is keeping his armor
for Allah's Cause (for Jihad)?
A warrior like Khalid, what he loved most
were his war equipment
Those what he loved most
His armors, swords, etc
His horse, all of them
had been given for Allah's Cause (for Jihad).
How could he pay for charity tax?
While he had nothing anymore
Look how Khalid bin Walid
gave his most loved property to waqf
The same thing with Utsman bin Affan ra
When there was dryness in Medina
and there was lack of water
there was a well
but expensive
It was called Raumah well
It costed a lot
Meanwhile, the Muslims were really
in need of water
So, the Prophet ﷻ said
<i>Who will purchase this well of Rumah</i>
<i>and place his bucket alongside
the buckets of the Muslims</i>
And Utsman bin Affan ra bought it
Brothers, this was how the Companions
practiced charity
They really understood the importance
of good deeds even after they died
They all wanted to continue to receive
rewards when they are already in their graves
Hopefully, we can do what they did
Brothers blessed by Allah SWT
Indeed, we realize that
everyone loves his property
But we have to keep in mind
that this property
shall be used by us
in the best way
Don't be stingy to ourselves
Whosoever is stingy
and do not give to charity
Do not give to charity for Allah's cause,
he is stingy to himself
Allah SWT said
<i>And whoever withholds only withholds
[benefit] from himself</i>
Because he prevents himself
from the greater rewards
from extraordinary benefits in this world,
and even more in the hereafter
Didn't the Prophet ﷻ say
<i>Charity does not in any way
decrease the wealth</i>
Some of the scholars
one of which was Al Baaji
a scholar from Maliki school
the meaning of this hadith, is that one who gives charity
will see his wealth increased by Allah SWT
So, if one does not give charity
he is stingy to himself
Not mentioning what he gets
in the hereafter
Therefore, the wealth in our hand now
will be accountable by Allah SWT
What have we done with this wealth
Allah reminds us that this wealth
is actually that of Allah SWT
We're just holding this wealth
We are entrusted to manage this wealth
Allah SWT said
<i>spend out of that in which
He has made you</i>
<i>successors</i>
<i>مُسْتَخْلَفِينَ</i>
مُسْتَخْلَفِينَ is from ْاسْتَخْلَفِ
which means successor
Previously, the wealth was in others' hand
now, it is in our hand
Afterward, it will go to another person
Whether it is sold
or inherited
As for now, it is in our hand
When it is in our hand, we shall use
in the best way
We will get the rewards
If it goes to those who inherit
or it is sold to others
it is no more ours
Then, before one dies,
he shall try
if he has the wealth and ability to,
to give for waqf
He shall not delay
A man went to see the Messenger of Allah ﷻ,
<i>يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ</i>
<i>O Messenger of Allah, what charity
that receives the biggest reward?</i>
The Prophet ﷻ said
The Prophet ﷻ said,
<i>The best charity</i>
<i>is the one you give
when you're healthy</i>
When one is ill, about to die,
he's eager to give to charity
When one is healthy
<i>close-fisted,</i>
<i>haunted by the fear of poverty</i>
<i>hoping to become rich</i>
<i>Do charity in such a state
of health and mind</i>
<i>Fight your stinginess</i>
<i>Show your faith</i>
The Prophet ﷻ said
<i>Chairity is a proof of your faith</i>
Imagine, when one is healthy
Wanting, with his future
long life, in need of much wealth
<i>close-fisted</i>
<i>haunted by the fear of poverty</i>
<i>Wanting to get richer</i>
<i>You must not defer</i>
<i>that you are about to die</i>
<i>and would he be saying:
This is for so and so,</i>
<i>My land is for so and so
This is for the mosque</i>
The Prophet ﷻ said
<i>Charity in that state is good
But</i>
when one is about to die,
it is less valued by Allah SWT
So, when one is healthy
still in possession of wealth
Say bismillah
and give to charity
Say bismillah, and give for waqf
Allah will replace with something better
in this world, and even more in the Hereafter
If you want to give to charity
if you want to give to waqf
Do not delay
<i>Later, when I have a lot of property
I will give to charity and for waqf</i>
Anytime you have something
give to charity
Don't be like a hypocrite whose characteristics
are immortalized by Allah SWT in the Quran
Allah SWT said
<i>And among them are those who made
a covenant with Allah</i>
<i>"If He should give us from His bounty"</i>
<i>'successful at work,
have a lot of property'</i>
<i>we will surely spend in charity</i>
<i>TBut when he gave them from His bounty,
they were stingy with it
</i>
We don't know
Whether when we have plenty of wealth
we still want to give to charity?
Or we become really stingy
We don't know whether we'll live
long enough
to be rich in our definition
Don't wait until you become a billionaire
Anytime you have a little, give to charity
Verily, among things that one regrets
when he dies
is for not giving charity
while he's alive
Allah SWT said
<i>And spend [in the way of Allah]
from what We have provided you</i>
Allah doesn't ask for all
<i>some</i>
<i>from what We have provided you</i>
<i>before death approaches one of you</i>
<i>and he says</i>
<i>"O Allah, if only You would delay me
for a brief term so I would give charity"</i>
We hope that Allah SWT makes it
easy for us to give to charity
We hope that Allah SWT makes it
easy for us to give for waqf
Whether wakaf in a big amount
or small amount
Alhamdulillah, today, there are
a lot of means to give for waqf
We can give a well as waqf
We can construct a drilled well
We can donate for the construction
of a mosque
We can write books for waqf
to be distributed
We can give our knowledge for preaching
to give beneficial knowledge
All of these are parts of waqf
that, when we die, will continue
to give us rewards
where we're in the grave
