We have all memorized the surah. It is a noble surah. The Prophet ﷺ recited it repeatedly in his daily life. The Prophet recited it when he was going to sleep. The Prophet ﷺ recited it when he finished the mandatory prayers. The Prophet recited it when supplicating in the morning and evening. And the Prophet ﷺ recited it when praying two rak'ahs before dawn. And the Prophet ﷺ recited it during the prayer witir. Thus, the Prophet paid special attention to this surah. This surah is called Al Ikhlas which means ... ... purification ... ... because it was specially purified to discuss the attributes of Allah SWT. قُلۡ هُوَ اللّٰهُ اَحَدٌ "Say, He is Allah, [Who is] One.'" اَللّٰهُ الصَّمَدُ "Allah the Eternal Refuge." He neither begets nor is born. وَلَمۡ يَكُنۡ لَّهٗ كُفُوًا اَحَدٌ "Nor is there to Him any equivalent." All verses, from the first till the last... ...describe specifically about our Lord of the Universe. Therefore, reading Al Ikhlas ... ... gets reward like reading one third of the Koran. The Prophet ﷺ said ... أَيَعْجِزُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ ثُلُثَ الْقُرْآنِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ "Is any one of you unable ... ... reciting a third of the Qur'an in a night? " "قلنا", said the companions. أَيُّنَا يُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ "O Messenger of Allah, how could one recite a third of the Qur'an (in a night)?" Nobody is capable. Then the Prophet said ﷺ: اللَّهُ اَحَدٌ اَللّٰهُ الصَّمَدُ ثُلُثُ الْقُرْآنِ "Indeed, the letter of Al Ikhlas is equivalent to a third of the Quran." In this surah, there is Allah's name a very noble one, Ash Shamad. Allah's name, Ash Shamad. Many of us who recite Al Ikhlas ... ... without really understanding the meaning of Ash Shamad. Among the most beautiful names of Allah is Ash Shamad. Linguistically, Ash Shamad has two meanings. As mentioned by Ibn Faris. In Mu'jamal Qayishi Lughah. The first meaning is ... Al Qast which means the goal. The second meaning is something that is sturdy and strong. Terminologically, this meaning is the same as the meaning of Ash Shamad. If we refer to Salaf's interpretation about the meaning of Ash Shamad... ...linguistically, there are two meanings of this word. Among the interpretations of the salaf... What is meant by Ash Shamad ... Is... One to whom all creatures return to... ... to convey their intentions. And this is Allah SWT. All creatures ask for their wishes to the Lord of the Universe. Because Allah is Ash Shamad [the Eternal Refuge]. Among Salaf's interpretations about Ash Shamad ... There is no cavity in it. And this is different from other matters than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. There is no cavity within Allah so, Allah SWT ... …does neither eat nor drink, and there is no breath as explained by the scholars. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said: وهو يطعم ولا يطعم "Allah SWT provides food, and Allah SWT is not fed." Allah SWT said: وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنْسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ رِزْقٍ وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ يُطْعِمُونِ "And I did not create the djinn and mankind except to worship Me." "I do not want from them any provision." Therefore, substances that have cavities, need energy, need to eat and drink ... ... then, it is a substance full of flaws. As for Allah SWT, Allah needs to neither eat nor drink. Because He is the Most Wealthy ... ...and does not need His creators at all. Among the meanings of Ash Shamad ... الباقي بعد خلقه "He remains eternal after His creatures." Allah SWT said: كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ وَّيَبْقٰى وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلٰلِ وَالَإِكْرَامِ "Everyone upon the earth will perish." "And there will remain the Face of your Lord owner of Majesty and Honor." In his hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said about Allah: هو الاول والأخر "Allah is the First, and the Last." And "the Last" means الذي لا بعده شيء "There is none after Allah. He is the Last. " Among the meanings of Ash Shamad ... As explained by Ibn Abbas RA ... He said, "Ash Shamad ... هو السيد الذي كامل في سؤدده "He is the perfect Leader in His leadership." الشريف الذي كامل في شرف "He is the Highness and perfect in His Glory." الحكيم الذي كامل في حكمته "He is the Wisest, perfect in His wisdom." العلم الذي كامل في علمه "He is the All-Knowing One perfect in His Knowledge." The point is Allah is the Most Perfect in all His Attributes. Of all the qualities of perfection, the most perfect attribute is of Allah SWT. And this is the meaning of Ash Shamad which should be known by a Muslim ... ... when he reads قُلۡ هُوَ اللّٰهُ اَحَدٌ اَللّٰهُ الصَّمَدُ The more we know Allah SWT ... ... the more we love Allah SWT. As the proverb says, "Unknown is unloved." When one wants to love Allah SWT... ... want to be more dedicated 'in his prayers ... ... want to be more peaceful in reading the Quran... ... he should try to know the names of Allah SWT. And know the attributes of Allah SWT. Among these, the name Allah Ash Shamad. أقول قولي هذا واستغفر الله لي ولكم ولسائر المسلمين من ذنب وخطيئة فأستغفره إنه هو الغفور الرحيم الحمد لله على إحسانه، والشكر له على توفيقه وامتنانه وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له تعظيما لشأنه وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله الداعي إلى رضوانه أللهم صلي عليه وعل أله وأصحابه وإخوانه معاشر المسلمين When we know that among Allah's names is Ash Shamad... What benefits can we get from our knowledge? First, Allah SWT said ... ولله الأسماء الحسنى فادعوه بها And to Allah belong the best names. So, invoke Him by these names. Then, when we can get closer to Allah using Allah's name Ash Shamad ... ... when we invoke something Allah SWT. As in the hadith ... سمع النبي صلى الله علية وسلم رجلا يقول في دعائه "One was praying and the Prophet heard his invocation." "This man invoked Allah by saying ... A man invoked Allah by saying: "O Allah, indeed, I invoke You." "By getting closer to You, and I testify." "That You are Allah ... ... for which no one has the rights to be worshipped, except You, O Allah." "You are the Eternal refuge, the One." "You do not beget and are not begotten." وَلَمۡ يَكُنۡ لَّهٗ كُفُوًا اَحَدٌ "And there is nonequivalent to You." So, when the Prophet heard this person's prayer ... The Prophet ﷺ said ... لَقَدْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ بِاسْمِهِ الْأَعْظَمِ الَّذِي إِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى وَإِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ "He has asked Allah by His Greatest Name" "if Allah is asked thereby Allah gives." "If Allah is called upon thereby, Allah answers." Then someone shall invoke Allah by putting on the name of Allah ... Then, among the benefits of knowing the name of Allah Ash Shamad ... ... that we know how heinous ... ... those who declare that Allah has a child. Because among the interpretations of Ash Shamad from Allah SWT ... ...that Allah is the Most Perfect, none is equal to Allah SWT... Allah does not beget and is not begotten. The word Allah in the hadith Quds narrated by Imam Al Bukhari ... Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said: كَذَّبَنِي ابْنُ آدَمَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ ذَلِكَ وَشَتَمَنِي وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ ذَلِكَ "Verily, the son of Adam tells a lie about Me." "And he has no right to do so." "And truly, the son of Adam abuses Me." "And he has no right to do so." فَأَمَّا تَكْذِيبُهُ إِيَّايَ "And he lies in My name." He says لَنْ يُعِيدَنِي "That Allah will not recreate me." This is a lie against Allah SWT. Because for Allah, it is very easy to recreate him. وَأَمَّا شَتْمُهُ إِيَّايَ "And his abusing Me... فَقَوْلُهُ ...is his saying... اتَّخَذَ اللَّهُ وَلَدًا "That Allah has begotten children." So, Allah SWT said ... وَأَنَا الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ "I am the One." "And I am الصمد الذي لَمْ أَلِدْ وَلَمْ أُولَدْ "I beget not nor was I begotten." وَلَمۡ يَكُنۡ لَّي كُفُوًا اَحَدٌ "And there is none like unto Me." Therefore, whoever says Allah has a child ... ... then he has denied the nature of Shamadiyah of Allah SWT. And he is considered to revile Allah SWT. As he shows the lack nature of that Allah SWT has. If Allah had a child, then His child will be equivalent to Allah SWT. The next lesson that we can get knowing that Allah is Ash Shamad... … is that ... Ash Shamad means that all creatures... ...return to Him whenever they ask help from Allah SWT. All creatures need Allah SWT. As Allah is the Richest, and Allah is the Most Perfect. His nature is filled with perfections. When we know that our Lord is the Most Perfect... When we know that we need Allah SWT... We will strive not to ask anything but to Allah SWT. We will strive not to hope anything but to Allah SWT. We humble ourselves, plead, invoke only Allah SWT. So, woe to the people, who when they are lost ... ... they ask others than Allah SWT. They ask the wali. They ask the Prophets, they asked the sunan. They asked the bodies in the cemetery. And they leave Ash Shamad. Allah the One, to Whom we ask everything. Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ... ... taught some companions that they shall not ask ... ... anything but to Allah SWT. A companion said ... عَوْفُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الأَشْجَعِيُّ كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ "We were next to the Prophet ﷺ. "Around 9, 8, or 7 of us." Then the Prophet said ... أَلاَ تُبَايِعُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ "Why don't you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?" "While we had recently pledged allegiance." "We replied, 'قَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ" "We have already pledged allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said again... أَلاَ تُبَايِعُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ "Why don't you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?" We stretched our hands allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. "And we said, 'قَدْ بَايَعْنَاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ" فَعَلاَمَ نُبَايِعُكَ "O Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you." "Now tell (on what things) should we pledge allegiance to you, O Messenger of Allah?" So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said... عَلَى أَنْ تَعْبُدُوا اللَّه وَلاَ تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا "You must pledge allegiance. "That you would worship Allah only." "And you would not associate with Him anything." وَالصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ "And observe five prayers." وَتُطِيعُوا "And obey me." Then the Prophet said وَلاَ تَسْأَلُوا النَّاسَ شَيْئًا "And you would not beg people of anything." فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ بَعْضَ أُولَئِكَ النَّفَرِ يَسْقُطُ سَوْطُ أَحَدِهِمْ فَمَا يَسْأَلُ أَحَدًا يُنَاوِلُهُ إِيَّاهُ "I saw that one of these people." "When he was on his ride, and his whip fell... ...he would not ask anyone to pick it up for him, and he got down... ...to pick it himself. He wanted to apply what he pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ. لاَ تَسْأَلُوا النَّاسَ شَيْئًا "Do not beg people of anything." The more one does not ask people anything, the stronger his tawhid is. The stronger his trust in Allah SWT. The need for Allah is higher. The more he does not need others. The Prophet ﷺ also said in Tsawban hadith. مَنْ يَكْفُلُ لِي أَنْ لَا يَسْأَلَ النَّاسَ وَأَتَكَفَّلُ لَهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ "Whosoever guarantees me that he will not beg from people ... …I will guarantee him Heaven. " Then Thawban said, انا يا رسول الله "ِI guarantee to you, I will not ask people for anything." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ guaranteed him Heaven. Therefore, among the words of the Prophet ﷺ,the Prophet said ... أَتَانِـيْ جِبْـرِيْلُ "Gabriel came to me." فَقَالَ "Then Gabriel said ..." يَا مُـحَمَّدُ ، عِشْ مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ Gabriel said, "O Muhammad." "Live as you wish, you will die." وَأَحْبِبْ مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنَّكَ مُفَارِقُهُ "Love what you want, O Messenger of Allah. You will part from it." وَاعْمَلْ مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنَّكَ مَجْزِيٌّ بِهِ "Do as you wish. "Surely you will be reckoned by Allah SWT." Then Gabriel AS said... وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ شَرَفَ الْـمُؤْمِنِ قِيَامُهُ بِاللَّيْلِ "Know that the glory of a believer is his night prayers." وَعِزُّهُ اسْتِغْنَاؤُهُ عَنِ النَّاسِ "And his glory is when he does not need others." Among the prayers taught by the Prophet ﷺ ... Grant me enough of what You make lawful." "So that I may dispense with what You make unlawful." واغنني بفضلك عمن سواك "Enable me by Your Grace to dispense with all but You."
