He said: قَالَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: إنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ “Verily, Allah SWT said: مَنْ عَادَى لِي وَلِيًّا فَقَدْ آذَنْتُهُ بِالْحَرْبِ “‘Whosoever shows enmity to a wali (friend) of Mine ... ..then I have declared war against him.” وَمَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدِي بِشَيْءٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ “And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me ...” ... than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. وَمَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي يَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ “And My servant continues to draw near to Me with nafil (supererogatory) deeds ... ... until I Love him.’ فَإِذَا أَحْبَبْتُهُ “When I Love him ...” كُنْتُ سَمْعَهُ الَّذِي يَسْمَعُ بِهِ “I am his hearing with which he hears.” وَبَصَرَهُ الَّذِي يُبْصِرُ بِهِ “And his sight with which he sees.” وَيَدَهُ الَّتِي يَبْطِشُ بِهَا “And his hand with which he strikes.” وَرِجْلَهُ الَّتِي يَمْشِي بِهَا “and his foot with which he walks.” وَإِنْ سَأَلَنِي لَأُعْطِيَنَّهُ “Were he to ask [something] from Me I would surely give it to him.” وَلَئِنْ اسْتَعَاذَنِي لَأُعِيذَنَّهُ، “Were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.” This hadith is shahih. It is narrated by shahih al Bukhari. This hadith explains about the meaning of a wali (friend of Allah). Whoever shows enmity to this wali ... ... Allah declares war to him. Allah will be against him. Who is this wali? In this hadith Qudsi ... Allah explains about it. A wali is a person who draws himself close to Allah SWT ... ... by doing obligatory religious duties. And, he also strives to get closer by doing supererogatory duties. And he is alwasy like that. وَمَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي “And My servant continues to draw near to Me with nafil (supererogatory) deeds.” And what is the result? The result is, when he becomes a wali, Allah said: حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ "I will love him." And when Allah loves him ... Allah will be his hearing, his sight, his hands, his feet. In another narration ... وَلِسَانَهُ الَّذِي يَنْطِقُ بِهِ “I will be his Tongue. And he speaks with this Tongue.” وَقَلْبَهُ الَّذِي يَعْقِلُ بِهِ “And his Heart, with which he thinks.” This is the result for a person who strives to become Allah SWT's wali. He will be always given strength by Allah SWT. Allah will protect his sight. He will not just look at anything. If he sees something bad Allah will turn his sight away. If there are bad things seen, he will avoid them. Allah will also protect his hearing. He will be made uneasy when he hears bad things. He does not like to listen to rumors. He will be kept away from listening to bad things. His heart hates unlawful matters. The same thing with his hands and feet. He will not go to places forbidden by Allah SWT. Once, a salaf was sick and his feet had to be amputated. When his feet were amputated, he said, “By Allah.” “I have not used this feet ... ...to walk to commit sins toward Allah SWT.” The same thing when he speaks. His tongue is given strength by Allah SWT. He is guided by Allah SWT. He will not speak without thinking. He will choose wise words to be said. And his heart is protected. He will not think of bad things. That he is always guided by Allah SWT. It does not mean that a wali is a person who never makes mistakes. Because that character is a character of the Prophets. But it means that, in general, they are obedient to Allah SWT. They keep themselves from committing sins toward Allah SWT. And even though they makes mistakes or commit sins ... ... they will return immediately to Allah SWT. These are the characteristics of Allah’s wali. This hadits does not mean that when a person is loved by Allah SWT ... ... Allah will become one with him ... ... as understood by ‘ululiyah and ‘itihadiyah. Or what we know as wihdatul wujud. That Allah will become one with His servant. This is syirq, that is associating Allah with others. When Allah says that “I am his hearing” it means that Allah guides his hearing. “I am his sight” means that Allah guides his sight. Therefore, in another narration, Allah said ... فَبِي يَسْمَعُهُ “With me, he listens.” فَبِي يُبْصِرُهُ “With me, he sees.” That means with Allah SWT’s guidance. In this hadith, Allah affirms that there is Allah, there is a servant. There is the one who invokes, and the one who grants. There is the one who asks for refuge, and there is the one who protects. There is the one who worship, and the one to be worshiped. That means that Allah is not the servant. So, it is really heretical those who think this hadith shows ... ... that there is manunggali kaula Gusti. That there is unification between the servant and God. That they say والعبد رب والرب عبد The servant is God. And God is servant As was explained by Ibnu Arabi who was misguided in this matter. معاشر المسلمين My fellow Muslims, may Allah SWT bless you. Indeed, the result when a person is loved by Allah SWT ... Allah will protect him. It is indeed true what the scholars have said. ليس الشأن ان تحب الله ولكن الشأن ان يحبك الله It is not a matter of you loving Allah. It is a matter whether Allah loves you or not. If Allah loves you, you will become His wali. To become Allah SWT’s wali. And when you become Allah’s wali, you will be guided by Allah SWT. Your sight will be protected. Your hearing will be protected, your steps will be protected. Your hand movements will be protected. Your heart and your mind will be guided by Allah SWT. It is even more than that. The result of Allah loving His servant. Allah SWT said: وَلَئِنْ اسْتَعَاذَنِي لَأُعِيذَنَّهُ، “Were he to ask [something] from Me I would surely give it to him.” And there are many stories showing that how the wali of Allah ... ... when they invoke Allah ... ... their invocation is granted by Allah SWT. Al Imam Al-Bukhari narrated a story in his shahih. When Rubayyah bint An-Nadhr, الرُّبَيِّعَ كَسَرَتْ ثَنِيَّةَ جاريه There was a woman, Rubayyah bint An Nadhr, Anas bin An-Nadhr's sister. She broke a woman’s tooth. Then .. ... Rubayyah’s family want to apologize and pay Arsh. فَطَلَبُوا منهم لأَرْشَ فَأَبَوْا And Rubayyah’s family asked to pay a compensation. But the woman’s family refused. فَطَلَبُوا منهم الْعَفْوَ They asked for forgiveness but refused. They asked for forgiveness but they were refused. They wanted to pay compensation, it was refused. Thus, they went to see the Apostle ﷺ. They asked for qishas. (equality in punishment) And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ... ... ordered that Rubayyah’s tooth should be broken. Anas bin Nadhr, a noble companion, heard this. He died a martyr in the Uhud war. He came to the Apostle ﷺ and said يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أتُكْسَرُ ثَنِيَّةُ الرُّبَيِّعِ “O Messenger of Allah, will the tooth of Rubai' be broken?” وَالله لاَ تُكْسَرُ ثَنِيَّتُهَا‏ “By Allah, O Messenger of Allah. Her tooth will not be broken!” The Messenger of Allahﷺ was surprised with what Anas had said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, يَا أَنَسُ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ الْقِصَاصُ “O Anas, what Allah has decreed is retaliation.” They don’t want to forgive, nor they accept compensation. There is no other way than qishas. But Anas bin An Nadhr said ... وَالله لاَ تُكْسَرُ ثَنِيَّتُهَا‏ “By Allah, her tooth will not be broken!” Suddenly the woman’s family came. رَضِيَ الْقَوْمُ فَعَفَوْا They accepted that and forgave her. They did not pay any compensation, and forgave them at once. The Apostle commented on this story, and said: ان من عبادِ اللهِ مَن أقسَم على اللهِ لأبَرَّه “'There are among the slaves of Allah ...” “... those who if they swear by Allah ...” “... Allah fulfills their oath.” These are Allah’s wali. And Allah SWT said in this hadits Qudsi ... وَلَئِنْ اسْتَعَاذَنِي لَأُعِيذَنَّهُ، “Were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.” As told about Al Hasan Al Bashri رحيم الله تعالى. He was an imam from tabi’in. He was chased to be captured by Hajaj bin Yusuf AtsTsaqafi His troop was chasing Al Hasan Al Bashri. Hasan Al Bashri hid in a companion’s house. And he invoked Allah SWT. The troop went into the house. They were looking for Hasan al Bahsri but did not find him. They reported this to Hajaj. “O Hajaj!” “Hasan Al Bashri was not there.” Hajaj bin Yusuf AtsTsaqafi said ... “He was, but Allah covered your eyes.” أقول قولي هذا واستغفر الله لي ولكم ولسائر المسلمين من كل ذنب وخطيئة فأستغفره إنه هو الغفور الرحيم الحمد لله على إحسانه، والشكر له على توفيقه وامتنانه، وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له تعظيما لشأنه وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله الداعي إلى رضوانه أللهم صلي عليه وعل أله وأصحابه وإخوانه معاشر المسلمين This noble hadith Qudsi explains ... ... that the path to be Allah's wali is open. We just need to do our obligations and leave what is forbidden. And we do supererogatory deeds. And obligations in Islam are easy to find out. Supererogatory deeds taught by the Apostle are easy to find out. Hence, everyone can become Allah SWT’s wali. To become Allah’s wali, one does not need to be famous. To become Allah’s wali, one does not need to be rich. Whosoever wants to become Allah's wali, they can. They just need to perform their obligations and leave what is forbidden. Perform supererogatory deeds. Then, they will become Allah SWT’s wali. It is not true ... ... some saying that ... ... to become Allah’s wali we need to do certain ways. Certain rituals. We have to learn from certain teachers. We have to perform certain ways. These are lies. It is easy to become Allah's wali. We just need to perform our obligations and leave what is forbidden. And one draws himself closer to Allah by performing supererogatory deeds. Then, one will become Allah SWT’s wali. And if he draws closer by performing supererogatory deeds ... Then, Allah SWT will even love him more. His degree in becoming a wali is higher. Therefore, it is strange to see that in this era ... ... people who commit sins are considered as wali. One who drinks khamr is considered wali. One who leaves the prayers is considered wali. And those who commit bad deeds. Mad men are considered as wali. I don’t know who is mad, the wali or people considering him as one. Those who commit sin and bad deeds are considered as wali. “My brothers, it is clear who Allah SWT's wali is. People who draw themselves closer to Allah by performing the Apostle ﷺ's deeds. People whose sight and hearing are protected. They keep their tongue from talking nonsense. From saying foolish things. Their mind is protected. Their foot steps are protected. But, some people who do not pray are considered as wali. Some people consider sinful acts as good deeds. And the person committing them is considered wali. People saying all religions are the same and all people will enter Heaven ... ... is considered wali. This thinking about Allah SWT's wali is wrong. We pray that Allah SWT makes us His wali. Helping His religion. We pray that Allah forgives our sins. We pray that Allah SWT put us in His Heaven.
