انالحمد لله نحمجه و نستعينه
و نستغفيره و نتوب اليه
ونعوذ بالله من شرور أنفسنا وسيئات أعمالنا
من يهده الله فلا مضيلله
و من يدهله فلا هديله
اشهد ان لا إلهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ
وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَريكَ لَهُ
وأشهد ان محمدا عبده و رسوله
لا نبيئ بعده
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ
وَلا تَمُوتُنَّ
إِلا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُون
فإن أصدق الحديث كتاب الله
وخير الهدي
هدي محمد -صلى الله عليه وسلم
وشرَّ الأمورِ محدثاتُها
وكلَّ محدثةٍ بدعةٌ وكلَّ بدعةٍ ضلالةٌ
وكلَّ ضلالةٍ في النارِ
معشر المسلمين، أوصيكم
وإياي بتقوى الله
فقد فاز المتقون
The scholars say,
«الإِيمان نصفان: »
Faith consist of two things.
Namely
الشكر و الصبر،
Be thankful of Allah for Allah’s favors,
And be patient for the tests
and misfortunes that Allah gives.
When, patient and thankful,
these characteristics are in a person,
then his faith is complete.
Thus, Allah combined these two characters
in many verses.
For example, Allah SWT revealed:
إن في ذلك لآيات لكل صبار شكور
"Most surely there are
signs of Allah’s greatness in this,
صبار شكور
for those who are patient,
grateful to Allah SWT.
Today, we will talk about being grateful.
Among things that will help us
to be able to be grateful to Allah SWT,
Is to contemplate that Allah’s favors
for us are so many.
Allah SWT says:
"وما بكم من نعمة فمن الله"
"All favors that you have obtained,
all are from Allah SWT."
Health, family, house,
safety, security.
All favors. Our position.
All favors that we have obtained,
all are from Allah SWT.
Moreover, Allah SWT
revealed in two verses.
وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
"Should you try to count God's favors,
you could never compute them!"
معشر المسلمين
If we sit, and
for hours and days
try to count Allah’s favors,
that Allah has given us,
Allah said, "لا تحصوها"
“You could never compute them!”
Because Allah has given us too many favors.
Among Allah’s favors for us
are favors that are apparent
and those unapparent.
Allah SWT said: وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ
نِعَمَهُ ظَاهِرَةً وَبَاطِنَةً
“And Allah amply bestowed
upon you His favors,
[both] apparent and unapparent.
Apparent favors, favors that we often see,
that we see with our own eyes
that we feel directly,
such as health, house, wives, children,
being a citizen, living safely,
living in comfort,
are those that are apparent.
We can study, go to school,
we can see our children play
happily; these are apparent favors.
Within these favors,
there is also the unapparent.
These favors are very noble.
It is even more noble than
the apparent that we feel.
Such as having faith.
The faith we have to Allah SWT.
Thus, when Allah SWT
Named the Surah,
An-Nahl, the 16th Surah,
most of the scholars name this Surah
with An-Ni’am.
Surah: “Favors of Allah SWT.”
Because Allah begins this Surat
by enumerating Allah's favors.
From the first verse to the 18th.
In the 18th verse, Allah said:
وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
“Should you try to count Allah’s favors,
you could never compute them!"
From the 1st to 18th,
Allah enumerated his Favors.
The first favor Allah mentioned,
اَتٰۤى اَمۡرُ اللّٰهِ فَلَا تَسۡتَعۡجِلُوۡ
سُبۡحٰنَهٗ وَتَعٰلٰى عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُوۡنَ
يُنَزِّلُ الۡمَلٰۤٮِٕكَةَ بِالرُّوۡحِ
مِنۡ اَمۡرِهٖ عَلٰى مَنۡ يَّشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهٖۤ
اَنۡ اَنۡذِرُوۡۤا اَنَّهٗ
لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّاۤ اَنَا فَاتَّقُوۡنِ
The first favor Allah mentioned,
He sends down
the Angel,
with the inspiration of His command,
upon whom He wills of His servants
that is the revelation that Allah revealed
to the messenger. This is a favor.
"اَنۡ اَنۡذِرُوۡۤا"
For the messengers to give warning.
“There is no deity except Allah.”
“There is no deity except Me,"
said Allah SWT.
The first favor Allah mentioned, among
the favors, is the favor of having faith.
Sometimes, we do not realize it.
This is an extraordinary unapparent favor.
See around us.
How many of mankind
still worships other mankind?
Who still worships apostles?
Who still worships sculptures?
Billions worship cows.
Many still worship
other creatures than Allah.
Many still believe in shaman.
Many still provide offering
for spirit and genies.
And Allah said:
اَنۡ اَنۡذِرُوۡۤا اَنَّهٗ
لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّاۤ اَنَا فَاتَّقُوۡنِ
“Warn mankind."
“There is no deity except Me, Allah SWT."
“So fear Me."
Having Faith, Believing that
there is only one God.
That will save one
in the Judgment day
From the eternal Jahannam,
To the the eternal pleasure of heaven.
Being secure, being happy.
How many of those unapparent favors
that we feel despite our lack of property,
despite of not living in wealth?
Sometimes, we do not have a high position.
But with fear and faith [to Allah],
Allah gives happiness to those who have
faith [in Allah]. The unapparent favor.
مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا مِنْ ذَكَرٍ
أَوْ أُنْثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤْمِنٌ
فَلَنُحْيِيَنَّهُ حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً
Whoever works righteousness,
man or woman,
and has Faith,
verily, to him will We give
a life full of happiness.
These are among
the unapparent favors we have.
We remember some favors
that Allah give.
Extraordinary favors. Sometimes, we do
prostration of gratitude for this favor.
We graduate, we have promotion,
our salary is raised.
We get married, all praise to Allah,
we do prostration to Allah SWT.
We earn titles,
This is the favor we remember.
A favor, when we get ill,
and suddenly Allah SWT cure us.
This is the favor we remember.
But there are other favors,
favors that we often forget.
Since these favors always come to us,
that we consider them
normal, thus we forget.
Among these favors,
Allah said, "وفي انفسكم افلا تبصرون"
And also in yourselves. Will you not
then see? Look at our body.
Our breathing. We breath each second.
Isn’t it a favor?
Allah provides us air,
oxygen for us to breath.
Allah makes our heart beat
so that we still can breath air.
If Allah wills,
He will make the oxygen disappear.
If Allah wills, Allah stops our heart
to beat, and that is the end of us.
And when we sleep,
when we cannot do anything,
we still breath,
our heart still beats.
That is an extraordinary favor. Our sight,
our eyes.
Our sight system that
Allah gives us. Extraordinary.
There is no advanced technology
that can imitate Allah SWT's creation.
هَٰذَا خَلْقُ اللَّهِ فَأَرُونِي
مَاذَا خَلَقَ الَّذِينَ مِن دُونِهِ
"This is God’s creation."
"Now show Me what is there
that others besides Him have created?”
Favors that we feel daily.
We feel it everyday, as if
this is a must for Allah SWT.
Sometimes we forget this favor.
But this favor is extraordinary.
Among favors that
Allah gives us,
are those that we ask
and those we do not ask.
There are a lot of favors
that we ask to Allah, we pray...
... to Allah SWT in our prostration.
After our prayer, we raise our hands,
ask to Allah SWT.
When we do umrah and hajj,
we ask Allah SWT.
In our night prayers, we ask Allah SWT,
and Allah gives all our requests.
Of which favors
that Allah gives although we do not ask.
Among them, Allah SWT mentioned
in Surat Ibrahim.
فهو الذي خلق السماوات والأرض
وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً
فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ
رِزْقًا لَّكُمْ
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْفُلْكَ لِتَجْرِيَ
فِي الْبَحْرِ بِأَمْرِهِ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْأَنْهَارَ
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الشَّمْسَ
وَالْقَمَرَ دَائِبَيْنِ
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ
اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ
Allah mentioned, among favors
that Allah has given us,
Allah created sky and earth.
You never asked for sky and earth.
Allah created air,
Allah created the sun.
Allah created the moon.
Allah created boats that
can run on the sea, on the river.
You never asked these favors,
but Allah provides them for you.
The Sun and the Moon turns
on their orbit.
These are the favors from Allah SWT
that you have never asked.
After saying this verse,
Allah said,
وَآتَاكُم مِّن كُلِّ مَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُ
[wa ataakum min kulli maa sa altumuuh]
“And He gave you
from all you asked of Him.”
Some qiraat it is read,
[wa ataakum min kullin maa sa altumuuh]
“And He gave you
from all you didn’t ask from Him.”
وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
“Should you try to count Allah’s favors,
you could never compute them!
There are a lot of favors
that we do not ask but Allah provides.
Thus, when the Prophet Moses AS
prayed to Allah in Surat Thaha,
when he was assigned for the Pharaoh,
he prayed,
رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي
وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي
وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي
يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِ
وَاجْعَلْ لِّيْ وَزِيْرًا مِّنْ اَهْلِيْ ۙ
هٰرُوْنَ اَخِى ۙ
اشْدُدْ بِهٖٓ اَزْرِيْ ۙ
اَشْرِكْهُ فِيْٓ اَمْرِيْ ۙ
كَيْ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِيْرًا ۙ وَّنَذْكُرَكَ كَثِيْرًا ۗ
اِنَّكَ كُنْتَ بِنَا بَصِيْرًا
قَالَ قَدْ اُوْتِيْتَ سُؤْلَكَ يٰمُوْسٰى
He prayed, “My Lord, expand for me my chest [with assurance],”
And untie the knot from my tongue
That they may understand my speech.
And appoint for me a minister Aaron (Harun).
Allah granted it. Allah said:
قَالَ قَدْ اُوْتِيْتَ سُؤْلَكَ يٰمُوْسٰى
"You have been granted your request.”
After that, Allah reminded Moses AS,
on the favors He gave
that he had never asked.
Allah said: وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَيْكَ
مَرَّةً اُخْرٰىٓ ۙ
And previously,
We conferred a favor on thee,
O Moses, a favor that you did not ask.
When he was little.
اِذْ اَوْحَيْنَآ اِلٰٓى
اُمِّكَ مَا يُوْحٰىٓ ۙ
اَنِ اقْذِفِيْهِ فِى التَّابُوْتِ
فَاقْذِفِيْهِ فِى الْيَمِّ
فَلْيُلْقِهِ الْيَمُّ بِالسَّاحِلِ
يَأْخُذْهُ عَدُوٌّ لِّيْ وَعَدُوٌّ لَّهٗ
وَاَلْقَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَحَبَّةً مِّنِّيْ
Allah enumerated his Favors
that Allah gave to Moses,
When he was little, he was about
to be killed by Pharaoh, who saved him?
Who saved him?
Who gave a revelation to his mother
to put the Prophet Moses...
... in a container,
released in the Nile river.
Allah did all. The favor that when Moses
was young, and could not ask a thing,
Allah gave favors to the Prophet Moses AS,
and so to us.
How many favors we have never asked,
Allah has given us more
that we expect.
How many favors
That we do not know that they are the best,
that Allah has given us?
Lastly, among the favors
that Allah has given us,
favors that Allah has sent
in a form of misfortunes.
We think of it as a misfortune.
But actually, there is something behind it.
There are extraordinary favors
that Allah has given us,
وَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا
وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ
"Perhaps you may hate a thing,
which is good for you.”
How many people
have experienced misfortune,
And it turns out, afterward, Allah awarded
them wonderful favors.
For example the Prophet Joseph, AS.
He had had misfortunes,
thrown by his brothers into a well.
And then he was sold as a slave.
Then, he was accused of adultery
with a woman.
And he was imprisoned. And what was after?
He was appointed minister in Egypt.
Misfortunes after misfortunes
result in favors.
Thus,
معشر المسلمين رحمة الله سبحانه وتعالى
we shall contemplate
God’s favors,
so that we can be thankful
to Allah SWT.
أقول قولي هذا
وأستغفر الله لي ولكم
ولسائر المسلمين من كل ذنب فاستغفروه
إنَّه هو الغفورٌ الرحيم
الحمد لله على إحسانه
والشكر له على توفيقه وامتنانه
وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده
لا شريك له تعظيما لشأنه
وأشهد أن محمدا عبده
ورسوله الداعي إلى رضوانه
اللهم صل عليه وعلى آله وأصحابه وإخوانه
All the favors we feel
oblige us to be thankful
to Allah SWT.
But however we are thankful,
we will not be able to
be thankful for all the favors
that Allah has given us.
All the favors we feel,
we can never enumerate them.
If we're asked to count them,
we won't be able to.
We can never be thankful enough
for being able to breath.
Our heart beat, we could never
be thankful enough for this favor.
And we are not talking other favors.
Our sight.
How many things have we seen?
Hearing.
How many things have we heard?
Speaking.
How many things have we uttered?
Writing. How many things have we written?
We are told to be thankful to all these.
We will not be able to.
Thus, Allah SWT revealed,
وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
إن الله لغفور رحيم
إن الإنسان لظلوم كفار
“Should you try to count Allah’s favors,
you could never compute them!
Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust
[Mankind] is [generally] ungrateful.
But we keep on trying
as much as we can.
The Apostle ﷺ prayed
until his feet were swollen.
When Aisha RA asked him,
“O Messenger of Allah, Why do you do that?
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
أفلا أكون عبداً شكوراً
Why wouldn't I be God's servant
who is thankful to Him?
We cannot equalize the Apostle.
But Allah revealed:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity.
We do the compulsory,
that Allah asked as to do as a small part
of us being thankful to Allah SWT.
And Allah is the Most Forgiving.
Allah said in another verse.
وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
إن الله لغفور رحيم
“Should you try to count Allah’s favors,
you could never compute them!
But Allah is the Most Forgiving
and the Most Merciful.
We pray so that Allah make us his servants
who are always thankful to Allah SWT.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ
يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا
اللهم صل على محمد وعلى آل محمد
كما صليت على إبراهيم
وعلى آل إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد
وَبَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ،
وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
كما,باركت على إبراهيم
وعلى آل إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد
اللهم أغفر للمسلمين والمسلمات
و المؤمنين والمؤمنات
الأحياء منهم والأموات
انك سميع قريب ﺃﺟﻴﺐ ﺩﻋﻮﺓ
انك سميع قريب ﺃﺟﻴﺐ ﺩﻋﻮﺓ وقضايا الحاجاتِ
اللهم آتِ نفوسنا تقواها
وزكِّها أنت خير من زكَّاها
أنت وليُّها ومولاه
اللهم اغفر لنا ما قدمنا وما اخرنا
وما اسررنا وما اعلنا
وما أسرفنا،
وما انت اعلم به منا
أنت المقدم وأنت المؤخر لا إله إلا أنت
اللهم اجعلنا لك شاكرين،
لك ذاكرين،
اللهم اجعلنا لك شاكرين،
لك ذاكرين
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً
وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً
وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ وأقيموا الصلاة
