Faith increases with good deeds. And faith decreases while committing sins toward Allah SWT. And good deeds ... ... as explained by the scholars ... ... consist of three things. Deeds by one’s tongue, one’s physical, and one’s heart. Many people, when they want to increase their faith, they're only concerned with... ... good deeds done with their tongue and their body. They recite the Quran with their tongue. They say Allah’s names with their tongue. They do good deeds with their actions. They do prayers, hajj, umrah, and many others. But good deeds are also with your heart. Many good deeds are performed by one’s heart. Among important good deeds ... ... is to have good intention. Therefore, the salaf said ... A mukmin’s intention is better than his actions. This hadits was narrated from the Apostle ﷺ. In a hadith, but this hadith is weak. But its meaning is true. Therefore, it is said by the salaf, ... and its meaning was explained by the scholars. Why would one’s intention ... ... be better than his actions? Scholars explain several sides. First. Intention is pure ... It can be said as act of worship. While action without intention ... ... cannot be said as an act of worship. Pure intention without action may be valued as an act of worship. While action without intention ... Cannot be valued as an act of worship. Therefore, the Apostle ﷺ said: مَنْ هَمَّ بِحَسَنَةٍ فَلَمْ يَعْمَلْهَا كتبَ لَهُ حَسَنَةً كَامِلَةً ، “Whosoever intended to perform a good deed ... ... and he did not do it ... Allah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed. He did not do it. But since he intended to do good, he will receive reward. But a good deed without intention, it is impossible to be rewarded. This is one explanation to why intention is better than actions. The second one. Intention is a heart’s deed. While action is physical deed. We know that the heart is the king. And the body parts are his troop. And of course a king’s deed would be valued differently than his troop’s deed. The third, in general ... ... Heart’s deed is better than physical deed. Therefore, the Apostle ﷺ said: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَنْظُرُ إلَى صُوَرِكُمْ وَلاَ أَجْسَادِكُمْ وَلَكِنْ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَأَعْمَالِكُمْ “Verily Allah does not look at your faces.” “Allah does not look at your bodies “ “But Allah looks at your heart and at your deeds.” The prophet mentioned heart first before deeds. Among things that make one’s intention is better than one’s deeds ... If one has good intention ... ... and he performs as he can, and he cannot finish doing it... It will be noted as a full deed. There are many sayings about this. Among them, the Apostle ﷺ said: During Tabuk war, The Apostle said to the companions. “There are some people in Medina.” “Whenever you cover a distance.” “Whenever you cross a valley. “They are with you.” “They have been detained by illness.” In another hadith, the Apostle ﷺ said: إلاَّ شَرَكُوكُمْ في الأجْرِ “They are with you they shared with you in the reward.” Why did they get the reward? Because they had intended to but could not go to war. Imagine. They stayed in Madinah. They did not go with the companions. To walk more than 700 km to reach Tabuk. And go back. 1.400 km would have been covered. They stayed in Madinah. But the reward was the same because they had intended to go to war. And that was the only thing they could do. They could not go because of their illness. The Apostle ﷺ also said: إنَّمَا الدُّنْيَا لأرْبَعَةِ نَفَرٍ “The world is for four kinds of people.” One upon whom Allah has bestowed wealth and knowledge. فَهُوَ يَعْمَلُ بِهِ فِي طَاعته “And he uses his wealth in Allah’s way.” “He fears his Lord in respect to them.” One upon whom Allah has conferred knowledge but no wealth. And he said. لَوْ أنَّ لِي مِثْل مَال فُلانٍ لَعَمِلْتُ مِثْلَ مَاعْمَل فُلانٍ “Had I possessed wealth like Fulan,” “I would have acted like so-and-so like the first person.” Then the Apostle ﷺ said: هُوَ بنيَّتِهِ، فأجْرُهُمَا سَوَاء “If that is his intention, his reward is the same as that of the other.” This shows that a good intention ... ... has great influence, and can receive a reward .. ... in full as if he performs it. The Apostle ﷺ also said: إِذَا مَرِضَ الْعَبْدُ أَوْ سَافَرَ كُتِبَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ مُقِيمًا صَحِيحًا “'When a slave falls ill or travels ... Then he will get reward ... ... similar to that he gets for good deeds practiced at home when in good health. When he is healthy, he always perform rawatib. When he is healthy, he prays at night. When he is not traveling, he performs supererogatory fasting. When he travels, he is not able to perform supererogatory fasting He can neither do rawatib nor pray at night. But Allah still writes down as if he performs them. Because his intention was obstracted due to traveling. The Apostle ﷺ also said: مَنْ سَألَ اللهَ تَعَالَى الشَّهَادَةَ بِصِدْقٍ بَلَّغَهُ اللهُ مَنَازِلَ الشُّهَدَاءِ، وَإنْ مَاتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ "He who supplicates Allah sincerely for martyrdom ... ... Allah will elevate him to the station of the martyrs ... Even if he dies on his bed." Even if he does not go to war. But if he asks Allah sincerely and keeps on trying ... But he cannot, for example because there is no war ... Then, even if he dies on his bed ... Allah will consider him as a martyr. The Apostle ﷺ also said: مَنْ أَتَى فِرَاشَهُ، وَهُوَ يَنْوِي أَنْ يَقُوْم فيُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَغَلَبَهُ النَّوْمُ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ، كُتِبَ لَهُ مَا نَوَى، وَكَانَ نَوْمُهُ صَدَقَةً عَلَيْهِ “Whoever goes to his bed ... ... intending to get up and pray qiyam at night ... ... then sleep overwhelms him until morning ... ... will have recorded that which he intended. And his sleep is a charity given to him by his Lord, the Mighty and Sublime.” It shows that intention has ... ... strong power, and sometimes it goes beyond the deed itself. Among things that shows that one’s intention ... ... is better than one’s deeds ... The scholars say, intention is pure without arrogance and ostentation. When one has a good intention, no one knows it. Unless he reveals it. Then he will have this arrogance and ostentation. As long as he hides it only Allah is Knowing. Therefore, there is no ostentation for his intention. There is no arrogance that will cancel his deeds. While deed is vulnerable to arrogance and ostentaion. Among things that can help us to reach higher reward ... ... is to be sincere to Allah SWT with our intention ... ... in worldly matters. If we intend it for Allah SWT ... These worldly matters will turn into good deeds. What did the Apostle ﷺ say to Sa’ad bin Waqsh RA? “You do not spend your wealth ... ... by which you desire the face of Allah SWT ... you will get reward for it even for the food you put in your wife’s mouth. The scholars say, when a man puts food in his wife’s mouth, ... it shows that they are being romantic. It is far from act of worship. It is worldly. They are being romantic. But if the husband intends this action for Allah SWT ... ... he will be rewarded. It is even more than that. When he does intercourse with his wife because of Allah SWT, he will be rewarded. The Apostle ﷺ said: وَفِى بُضْعِ أَحَدِكُمْ صَدَقَةٌ In man's sexual Intercourse (with his wife), there is charity. We spend plenty of our time to find a living to provide for our family. And we shall have the intention that we work to worship Allah SWT. Our intention is to provide for our wife and children. Our intention is to use this wealth to tie relationships. Our intention is to use this wealth in a good way. With this intention, all of these actions may be rewarded by Allah SWT. Do not make our times, Hours to go here and there from morning afternoon, even evening. If we do not intend it for Allah SWT. We will lose this time, and there is no value in it. If we intend it for Allah SWT ... Then it will be valued and rewarded by Allah SWT.
