The correct pronunciation is not /akhwat/
but /akhowat/
There is an "o"; /akhowat/
And /akhowat/ means...
...the plural for "ukht."
It is a form of plural,
not singular.
"ikhwan" is also not a form of singular.
The singular form is "Al Akh".
But that has become part
of our language.
Men are called ikhwan.
"Is your child ikhwan or akhwat?"
"You have many children or a few?"
The use of "ikhwan" insinuates that
there are 3 or 4 babies are born.
So, in Indonesia,
ikhwan is to designate male.
And "akhowat" female.
While in Arabic, akhowat is
the plural of ukhti" [sisters]
And "ikhwan" is a group of "akhi".
[brothers]
Both are forms of plural
And akhowat means...
In arabic, it means female teenagers.
Girls, and the term for "ladies"
is "Nisa".
So, when Syaikh Abdur Razaq
came to Indonesia...
...he was walking with the brothers,
some said...
"Syaikh, that is the prayer's place
for akhwat."
The syaikh was laughing.
There is no term suh as mushala "akhowat"
in Saudi; they say "mushala annisa"
So, "Girl's mushala."
"I understand."
Said the Syaikh, laughing.
Indonesians are confident
when they speak.
While he's mistaken.
"This is mushala akhwat.
When a Saudian hears this
they would think it is for girl teenagers.
Not for ladies
So, the correct one is
"Mushala Annisa."
