As narrated by Ibn Hibban in his shahih. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالْخَوَاتِيمِ “Verily, (the rewards of) the deeds are decided by the last actions (deeds).” Al Imam Ahmad also narrate in his Musnad ... ... From Sahl bin Saad RA ... ... that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ و إِنَّهُ لَمن أَهْلِ النَّارِ “A person performs deeds of the people of Paradise.” “While he is among the people of Hell.” و إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ النَّارِ و إِنَّهُ لَمن أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ “A person performs deeds of the people of Hell.” “While he is among the people of Paradise.” And the Apostle ﷺ said: و إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالْخَوَاتِيمِ “Verily, the deeds depend upon one’s last action (deeds).” Al Imam Al Bukhari rahimahullahu ta'ala also narrated in his shahih book. From Sahl bin Saad RA. That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The Apostle ﷺ said: (During the Uhud war) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If anyone ... ... would like to see a man from the people of the Fire ... ... let him look at this man.” A companion followed the person. He was in that state i.e., fighting fiercely. He fought fiercely. Many pagans died in his hands. He was followed by a companion. He was surprised to hear what the Apostle ﷺ said. The Apostle said, “If one wants to see a dweller of Fire, look at this man.” So he was following the man. The man continued to fight fiercely until he was wounded. It turned out that he could not resist his pain. He put his sword upward. He placed it against his chest ... And pressed it with great force ... till it came out between his shoulders. He hastened to end his life. Then the Apostle ﷺ said: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فيما يبدو للناس وهو من أهل النار “A person performs deeds like the deeds of the people of Paradise ... ... apparently before people.” “Apparently before people. But he would be amongst ... ... the dwellers of Hell.” And the Apostle ﷺ said: و إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالْخَوَاتِيمِ “Verily, the deeds depends on the last actions (deeds).” My dear fellow Muslims, may Allah SWT bless you. These hadiths remind us ... ... not to be too proud of what we do. Of our righteous deeds. Of our melodious recitation. Of our charity. Of our Quran recitation. Of our prayers. Of our righteous deeds. Because we do not know how we end. وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوت “No soul perceives in what land it will die.” Some experts in interpretation say ... ... a person would not know his condition in that land when he dies. Whether he would be in good condition or in bad condition. Allah SWT makes this secret. This is Allah's secret and no one knows except Allah SWT ... ... about one’s faith. Whether he is the dweller of Paradise or the dweller of Hell. The scholars say ... ... so that a person will not be proud with what he does. He will not be proud with what he does ... ... because he does not know how he would end. Moreover, if one knows that he will enter Paradise ... ... he will be arrogant. And he will not do righteous deeds knowing he will go to Paradise anyhow. On the contrary, if he knows that he will be in Hell ... ... he will be even more disbelieving. He will do even more wrongdoing because he knows that he’ll be in Hell anyhow. But when this matter is kept secret by Allah SWT ... ... no one knows about it ... ... then everyone will be cautious with their righteous deeds. They shall not be proud and boastful with what they do. Nor they shall look down on others. It would be possible that the sinner facing him ... ... would not necessarily end badly. It would be possible that he repents to Allah ... ... and Allah grants him a good ending. Therefore Hafs ... A salaf named Hafs said to Ibn Muharak ... “I said to Ibn Mubarak.” رأيت رجلاً قتل رجلاً فوقع فى نفسى أنى أفضل منه “I saw a man killed another man.” “It occurred to me that I am better than the murderer.” And what did Ibn Mubarak say? Ibn Mubarak said: “Do you feel safe about yourself?” “It is even worse than the sin he committed.” What he meant was ... “On what basis do you think you are better than him?” “Are you sure you are going to Paradise?” “Are you sure the murderer will go to Hell?” “You don’t know how you will end and how the murderer will end.” “It is possible that you end badly.” “And it is possible that the sinner will end well.” Therefore, however a person does righteous deeds ... ... he shall continue to have fear to Allah SWT. He shall continue to do righteous deeds, and supplicate Allah SWT ... ... to be granted with good ending. When Allah wants good for a servant... ... Allah puts him in action before his death.” The companions asked: كَيْفَ يَسْتَعْمِلُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ “How does He put him in action?” It means that Allah puts him in doing righteous deeds. The Apostle ﷺ said: يُوَفِّقُهُ بعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ قبل موته ثم يقبضه عليه “Allah makes it easy for him to do righteous deeds before he dies.” “And Allah takes his soul in good ending. My fellow Muslims, may Allah SWT bless you. Among matters that influence a person greatly to have a good ending ... ... or a bad ending ... ... dying in good ending or in bad ending ... ... is sincerity. Therefore, when the Apostle ﷺ said: إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيَعْمَلُ بِعَمَلِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ فيما يبدو للناس وهو من أهل النار “A person performs deeds of the people of Paradise.” It turns out that he enters Hell. Because, the Apostle ﷺ said: فيما يبدو للناس “His deeds are apparent for people.” It means that he is not sincere when he does righteous deeds. He has something bad in his heart. He wants to be praised, or he wants to be flattered? To be respected. Or he is proud with the righteous deeds he has done. Or he looks down on others. He insulted other people’s deeds. He looked down on other people’s deeds. This disease makes a person sinks in a bad ending. Hence, a person shall guard his sincerity. Being sincere is a difficult matter. And to guard it is even more difficult. Hence Allah gives us a lesson from the companions during Uhud war. At that time, their sincerity was shaken in the middle of the battle. Allah SWT said: "Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you [at the beginning of Uhud war]." “When you were killing the enemy by His permission ... ... until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order.” And Allah says: وَعَصَيْتُم مِّن بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُم مَّا تُحِبُّونَ “And you disobeyed ... ... after He had shown you that which you love.” Allah presented ghanimah before them. So, some companions left defense post. And they collected the spoils of war. Their sincerity was shaken when the world was presented before them. Then Allah SWT said: مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الآخِرَةَ "Among you are some who desire this world.” “And among you are some who desire the Hereafter.” And Allah says: “And He has already forgiven you.” Allah pardoned the companions in Uhud Battle, although they were guilty. But, their guilt that had been forgiven by Allah SWT ... ... can be a lesson for us. What did Ibn Masud say when this verse was revealed? Ibn Masud who was among the first companions ... He said “I never suspected.” It had never occurred to him. That a companion can have this envy of world. A companion could not be wanting the world. How could they want the world? They moved and left their hometown. They left their property. They left their family to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They came with him in a battle. They were willing to sacrifice their soul, body and property. So, how could not they be sincere? But Ibn Masud RA said, “I never suspected.” “Until a verse from Allah SWT was revealed about us.” مِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنكُم مَّن يُرِيدُ الآخِرَةَ "Among you are some who desire this world.” “And among you are some who desire the Hereafter.” These are the companions. In the beginning, their struggle and sincerity were extraordinary. In the middle of their path, their sincerity was shaken. What about us? A person shall not be so sure about his sincerity. He shall always verify their soul and heart. Has he always been sincere in doing his righteous deeds? Or is he expecting praises and flattery? Is he expecting a recognition from people around him? Or is he doing his righteous deeds for Allah SWT? So whosoever whose intention is not sincere ... ... his intention will get him into a bed ending. ... as mentioned by the Apostle ﷺ Then, a person shall always try to be sincere. And he shall try to keep away his intention from worldly matters. They are many. Wanting to be wealthy, wanting to be prioritized. Wanting to be glorified, wanting to be flattered. Wanting to be praised and other things may damage one’s sincerity and cause ... ... a person to sink into bad ending.
